Maybe the probes have not stored enough propulsion to change coordinates (in real life).

How about considering the ability to capture a probe and change its coordinate to its home planet??

Can the probes be added a new feature -- a recorder to record the coordinates of ships passing the probe when the probe reach its desination. I think this is what real probe do.

there is a probe like this:
the trace probe.
but we could add some more information to the reports:
- where the fleet started the hyperjump
- how big the fleet was (only "small" or "large")
- and it should summarise if there are 3 fleet of the same player
- it should state the players name instead of the coords (if you know the coords)

I have another suggestion on probes.
Let them be portable and can be carried by the mothership like in real situation.

Well I think the probes should have so defences when traveling through space. I mean like a emp thing or something so it can escape from attackers.

nice idea, but first they need attackers, before they can start think about to defend them

actually a probe cannot be attacked, only fleets are fighting
