This is only a small gripe, and I'm sure I've probably missed something obvious, but why wasn't the enemy cruiser in this battle destroyed?

I understood that with the fighter, since I was the attacker, but not the cruiser? If I was the attacker then I thought that all my ships in all classes would attack first. Now I'm REALLy confused! I thought I had the battle system sussed!
