The Piranha is part of the Tholian Tech (sorry, my first time, it is not Human).
The Piranha is a strong c3 mass cover ship, but a bit weak vs lower classes due to its smaller shields.

Mass cover class 3? To protect something you mean? Because you will loose points against cruisers with this ship.

Yes, it is good for protection when enemy is superior in c3, especially when enemy has "heavy" stuff like dreads or gunships.
They get to kill a 40MP enemy, instead of a 60MP one, and they might not be able to finish off all your c3 if you have piranhas.
That is the general idea, not to win equal MP battles. It is also possible that they are good when you are superior vs expensive enemy fleet, since they will take some fire that would otherwise kill more expensive cruisers....

| Also works kind of like a decoy with bite.... unlike the jammers, which only serve well as a decoy. |
